The link is to the sports scores web site (iPhone app section of the site). What is special about this particular web site? Well it had highly touted version of iPhone web app for a while now. Several days ago I noticed that Livescore.com app is now out as the native iPhone app (there used to be web version for a while now). Check out the web version at:
http://iphone.livescore.com/

and then download the native version at:
http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/livescore/id356928178?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D6

After examining both you can be probably see for yourself difference between web version and native version of the app.

Q: How to set the application icon that will be shown on the iPhone?

Ans: To set icon first one needs to create 57×57 image (type: png). You have a choice of apps that can do this your you so feel free to use any of them that you like (Photoshop, GIMP, Paint, etc). Once image has been created please add it into your Resources folder of your project. Next, one needs to edit Info.plist in your project (under Resources section of your project in Xcode). Find the Info.plist file and open it. It should display you a table with keys/values in the columns. Please change the Value for Key “Icon file” to be the same name as the name of your image file. And that is it. If you compile your application it should now show the icon on your iPhone (or your simulator).

Game is developed for both iPhone and iPod Touch with support for iPhone OS 3.0 and above. The game itself is based on classic pipes puzzle but we have included some twists and turns which will make it rather challenging and more exciting. The goal of the game is to collect as much points as possible while advancing through levels. In order to complete a level you need to create a pipeline between the valve and the drain before the time runs out. Main features are:

5 different game modes

unlimited levels

local and online scoreboards

sound control

It’s free and you are all invited to give it a try. Comments about the game experience would be quite appreciated. Direct link to the game on App Store is here:

I have had pleasure to work in different programming IDE’s over the years (IDE = Integrated Development Environment). Well to be honest I was lucky to have been able to work in some of the best ones, namely: Visual Studio (6.0 through 2008), Eclipse (and variations such as PyDev, CDT, vXWorks, Carbide.C++, Dev-C++), and of course Xcode. What I have preached to my junior colleagues, friends, students was to master IDE if they want to be truly productive (regardless of the programming language they use, OS they want to program to, etc). Knowing tips and tricks of IDE will help you solve the problems faster, write better code, and get everything done in time for your favorite football game, series, etc. So what is a first thing that I recommend to learn about IDE? Can you guess?

Well, first thing that I usually recommend is to learn the keyboard shortcuts. Knowing keyboard shortcuts will increase the speed of typing and automatically increase your productivity. You will still have to use mouse on certain occasions but code development will be done much faster (if code completion is enabled in your IDE increase in speed is even more evident).

My favorite keyboard shortcuts in Xcode are (assuming “Xcode Default” keyboard shortcuts) and the ones I used the most:

Apple + B = Build project

Apple + Return = Build and Go

Apple + X/C/V = Cut/Copy/Paste

Apple + / = Comment/Uncomment selected text

Option + esc = Completion list

Apple + S = Save

Apple + Z/Y = Undo/Redo

….

This was just a short list of shortcuts I use…. What I would like to hear from other people is what shortcuts they use the most….. So feel free add to this list…

You can always customize keyboard shortcuts Xcode preferences->Key Bindings dialog box. I will not go into detail on this but if you are interested a fairly detailed explanation how to modify keyboard shortcuts is available in the official Apple document called “Xcode Workspace” (available at following address). So if you are interested in setting your own shortcuts go check this document out.

Once upon time in land far far far away I played game called Pinball Fantasies on platform long forgotten but vividly remember (and still much liked by me and many other people – yeah it is Amiga 500). Well since then I had a chance to play many pinballs (both computer and full blown ones) but the one I had chance to play recently made me spend more than few hours on it. It is named ”Wild West Pinball” and it has elements of a great game:

Great graphics (tryly they hit the spot with graphics, and in-game zooms)

Quality audio (I have to admit that I liked pinball games more for their audio then for their graphics)

Challenging gameplay (All who have played easy pinballs know what I am talking about; pinball has to be challenging a bit or it will get boooring very soon)

I will not go into more detail about game itself. I’ll just mention that it uses standard gameplay (tapping on left and right hand screens to hit the ball) and pulling down to launch the ball. If you get the chance play this game (any true fan of pinball will appreciate it).

Note: I just checked the Appstore and the Wild West Pinball is now .99 cents. When I got it was free (I am attaching a proof it was free at the time)

Second app I would like to mention is good for yes/no, go/or not to go, to be(er)/or not to be style of decisions. Yeah those kind of decisions we have made using a simplest of techniques such as flipping the coin. So there is an app that just does that, “flip the coin”. It is called “Coin free”. It allows you to flip a coin. There several different coins to choose from (different countries). The sound of flipping is that of flipping a coin and falling on a glass table.

The options in the game allow you to set which gestures will cause a coin flip, which coin to use, and sound on/off.
The development feature of this app I like is the way that paid app is advertised. The paid version allows much larger choice of coins. So in the options when you are choosing coins the developer has ability to see other coins that you can get which is appreciated. It is a simple way and effective way of promoting the paid version of the app.
